Evaluation of High-resolution Sea Surface Current Fields in the Baltic Sea Derived from Multi-sensor Satellite Imagery

چکیده
We present evaluations of two-dimensional surface current fields based on quantitative comparisons of satellite images with numerical model results provided by the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). Earlier studies have shown that multisensor data can be used to derive sea surface. However, a quantitative evaluation of the resulting vector fields is difficult, due to the low availability of in-situ measurements. Current predictions made by numerical models are of higher resolution, but still below the resolution of the computed currents. Additionally, they predict the currents for coarser water-depth intervals rather than the currents on the very surface. Thus, we explore different spatial interpolation methods and present the resulting comparisons.

From Multi-Sensor Tracking of Sea Surface Films to Mesoscale and Sub-Mesoscale Sea Surface Current Fields
The knowledge about mesoscale and sub-mesoscale sea surface current fields is of high interdisciplinary interest, since it results in a better understanding of ocean-atmosphere interactions. However, many available numerical model results are of resolutions, which are too coarse to investigate mesoscale and sub-mesoscale turbulent features like eddies, particularly in coastal waters. In this wo...

The aim of the study presented herein is to use multisensor / multi-channel satellite images to compute meso-scale surface currents in the Northern and Central Baltic Proper. The images were acquired by the Thematic Mapper (TM) aboard Landsat, the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) aboard ERS-2, the Wide-Field Scanner (WiFS) aboard the IRS satellites, and the Seaviewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor (S...
متن کاملGravity acceleration at the sea surface derived from satellite altimetry data using harmonic splines
Gravity acceleration data have grand pursuit for marine applications. Due to environmental effects, marine gravity observations always hold a high noise level. In this paper, we propose an approach to produce marine gravity data using satellite altimetry, high-resolution geopotential models and harmonic splines. On the one hand, harmonic spline functions have great capability for local gravity ...

Sequential multi-sensor satellite images from Envisat ASAR and WiFS are used for the computation of mesoscale surface currents in the southestern Baltic Sea (Southern Baltic Proper). Marine surface films of different origin and accumulated algae at the water surface are imaged by the sensors working in the optical, infrared, and microwave part of the electromagnetic spectrum and can thus be use...
متن کاملInvestigation of Geostrophic and Ekman Surface Current Using Satellite Altimetry Observations and Surface Wind in Persian Gulf and Oman Sea
The rise of satellite altimetry is a revolution in the ocean sciences. Due to its global coverage and its high resolution, altimetry classically outperforms in situ water level measurement. Ekman and geostrophic currents are large parts of the ocean’s current, playing a vital role in global climate variations. According to the classic oceanography, Ekman and geostrophic currents can be calculat...
